Amateur Athletics.

For the purpose of selecting certain men to represent the province at the championship meeting to be held at Dunedin on Feb. 17, the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club notified that it would hold a series of test races at Lancaster Park yesterday. So many, however, of those elected to go into training have stated their inability to go south, that except for the long-distanca events, it was found that trials were unnecessary. Accordingly, the test meetingresolved itself into a three-mile flat race, but as the Club's time-keepers were on the ground, several other men took the opportunity to execute {rials by themselves over various distances. Four went to the post for the three-mile event, which was won by E. S. Leveraedge, while none of the other starters, J. W. Jones, C. Rides and A.Cook succeeded in finishing the distance. Eides, Levereedge and Cook were each in turn responsible for the running for two miles, when Cook retired. Eides followed his example in the next lap and Jones dropping out half a mile from home, left Leversedge to finish alone. A heavy north-easterly breeze was blowing and, under the circumstanc« s, the time — 17min 57£aec— was fairly fast. Intending competitors at the championship meeting; are reminded that entries close to-day with Mr L. A. Cuff, honorary secretary to the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
