SUICIDES.
[Per Pbsss Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Jan. 25. A man named William Fife, recently from Wellington, cut his throat at Martin- i borough, Wairarapa, this morning. No particulars arc to hand.
———————— A man named Jamea Metcalf, a tinsmith j who lives in Lower High Street, committed auicide this morning by hanging himself. Mr E. Eavenhill, of the Caversbam Hotel, noticed that the deceased's shop was all shut up at about 10.15, and sent a man named Harry Newlands along to see if there was anybody abont. Newlanda went into the shop, and finding no one there, went upstairs, where ho saw deceased hanging by a rope from a i trap-door in the ceiling. Mr Eavenhill ■ wa3 sent for, and Newlands cut the body down and informed the police. Sergeant Barlow and Dr Meares were soon in attendance, and found life was extinct. The deceased last night posted a letter to his daughter, who livea in Sydenham, stating that by the time she got the letter he would be out of the world. The letter further stated how he would like his property disposed of. Deceased was last seen aliva about 9.15 this morning. His neighbours had not noticed anything strange in his action?. An inquest will I be held in due course.
