This Dat. (Before Meßßrs F. E. Wright and J. M. Batham, J.P.'s.) Dbunkenness. — A first offender, who did not appear, was fined 5s with cab hire, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. —Richard Legg was also fined ss, with the same alternative. Attempted Suicide. — Hannah Howe was charged with having, on Jan. 10, at 127, Peterborough Street, attempted to commit suicide by cutting her throat. Inspector Broham conducted the case againat the accused, who pleaded " Guilty." The Inspector stated that for some weeks previous to the commission of the offence the woman had been Buffering from melancholia, and had received medical treatment. On the night of Jan. 9 Bhe had threatened to destroy herself, and her husband therefore hid his razor. However, on the morning of Jan. 10 Mr Howe heard a noise in his wife's bedroom, and, going in, found his wife on the floor with her throat cut. Dr Russell was called in, and ordered the removal of the woman to the Hospital. The accused was discharged, after being bound over for six months in her own recognisance of .£2O and her husband in a like amount. Throwing Stones. — Cato Cooper was charged with throwing Btones on Jan. 1, damaging a door to tbe extent of sa, the property of Mary Ann Prisk. Mr J. C. Corr appeared for tbe informant, who stated that she lived in Colombo street north, and waa subject to a great deal of annoyance from a number of boys, who were always throwing stones at her place. The boy Cooper was one of this band. Other witnesses were called for the prosecution. For the defence it was alleged that Cooper was not near Mrs Prisk's place on Jan. 1. The Bench ordered the boy to pay for the damage done, cautioning him that the punishment would be much more severe if > further complaints were made. (Before Mr R. Beetham, R.M.) i Alleged Deskbtion. — Augustus May 1 was charged with deserting his wife, Eliza- , beth May, and her two children. Com- > plainant stated that her husband deserted . her five months ago, and during the past seven weeks she had not received any money from him. Defendant said he ; was willing to go back to his wife, ■ and Bupport Mb family. He had been out i of work for some time past, but hoped to ■ get work this week. Complainant said she i was willing to live with her husband, prok viding he behaved himself and lived comi fortably. William Logan, claim £2 Ss lOd. A set-off of £9 was claimed, one item in the latter boincr j8& charged by defendant for teaobing Boss the business of skin dealing. After hearing evidence with regard to the partnership, the Bench gave judgment for plaintiff • for amount claimed and costs 6s, and in the Bet-off they allowed 14s only.
