Musical Amalgamation.
*•> It is understood tbat the amalgamation between the Musical and Orchestral Societies has been decided upon, the preliminary trial of three months proving that the scheme waa workable ard to the advantage of both. At a meeting of the Committee of tho Orchestral Society held last week, it was unanimously resolved to recommend' that the union should be effected as from Jan. 1, and "a meeting is to be held this evening to confirm the action of the Committee. The Musical Society has also passed a similar resolution. To enable the new Society to have a fair start, it has been decided to give a vocal aud instrumental concert on Thursday, Dec. 14, in the Tuam street hall, for the purpose of providing funds to jneet a small deficiency at the close of the present season, and the support of all subscribers and well-wisherß is confidently looked for. On the following Wednesday the Musical Society will give the last concert of the season to its subscribers (tickets also being sent to subscribers of the Orchestral Society). This concert, consisting of The Messiah, will, as was the case last year, take place in the' Cathedral, through the courtesy of the Bißhop and Chapter. The Boprano solos will be taken by Misa Roes, of Wellington, a lady new to Christchurch, but well known in the northern cities aa an able exponent of oratorio music. The contralto solos will be snng by Misa Venie Flower, of Ashburton, a lady (also a stranger in this city) recently from Home, who brings very favourable credentials as to her ability. Mr H. Weir will take the tenor and Mr A. Millar the bass solos. There will be a choruß of 120 voices, an orchestra of 30 members, and with the able assistance of Mr Q. F. Tendall at the organ, the performance of the oratorio should be one of the best ever given in Christchurch. On the following evening it will ba repeated to the general public, when admission will be by ticket issued under the control of the Chapter. An offertory will be male after each concert, th 9 first to be divided between the funds of the Musical Society and those of some local charity. On the second night the offertory will be in aid of the funds of the Cathedral. ,■
