THE PUBLIC TRUSTEE.

A Reply to Justice Conolly's Attack.

[Per Pessb Association.'] WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. With respect to Judge Conolly'a attack on the Public Trustee the New Zealand Times' says that the latter was bound to act as he did, by law, under risk of the Native owners having a clear action against him. . Mr M'Callum might have had a tenancy under the Act of 1892, but refused, and |he Trustee had no option but to proceed against him on behalf of the Native owners. The Times suggests that in cases like Mr M'Callum's, where illegality of tenure is not the tenant's fault, the Colony should step in and pay compensation.
