BOARD OF EDUCATION.

North Canterbury, THIS DAT. The ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held this morning ; present— Mr E. G. Wright (Chairman), and Messrs T. H. Anson, H. W. Peryman, T. W. Adams, J. Joyce, R. Meredith, A. Saunders, R. Westenra and and the Hon W. Montgomery. ALTEBATION OF SJTLLABUS. A letter was received from several lady teachers, asking that the syllabus be altered in certain details. The matter was referred to the Inspectors with the intimation that the Board approved of the recommendation. THE THIED INSPECTOR, The Board resolved itself into Committee ot the whole to consider the applications for the position of third Inspector, and Mr Ritchie, head master at Opawa, was appointed. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Education Department, statingthatanother^JlOOO would be sent whenever the estimates were passed, probably about August. The Belfast Committee had again applied for the purchase of an addition to the school site. The matter had been placed on the estimates forwarded to the Government ; there were no funds available at present. Grants for repairs, &c„ had been made as follow :— Winslow, repairs, £2 ; Teddington, new tank* Ealing, fiOO maorocarpa j Southbrook, 500 maorocarpa, there were no funds for a well ; Malvern, poroh to house, £5; View Hill, window in master's room; Addington, partition, other matters referred to Inspectors ; Doyleston, additional closet} Woodend, repairs; Sydenham, repairs £5, more extensive repairs being .deferred till the Board is in funds; Ealing, teacher's house of two rooms to be built. Application from Hinds, fuel shed and dividing fence ; Hurunui, refund of £2 10a for fencing. Reports, or farther information, were directed to he obtained upon applications from Chertsey, Hampstead, Tinwald, West Melton and Eiffelton. A graded floor would be laid at Glentunnel when funds were available. The Marshlands Committee had been requested to re-fix everything that had been sawn through or removed. A letter was received from Mr Manning, offering to buy the strip of land not enclosd by the fence at South Belt as altered. It was resolved to adhere to the original arrangement. ' A letter was received from the Commie- ; sioner of Crown Lands stating that the Land Board would recommend the Government to grant the application for an extension of the sohool site at Hinds. A letter had been received from the Perry road School Committee, stating that the recent grant for repairs was insufficient, and representing the need of a new infant school. It had been informed that the infants' school was on the estimates submitted to Government, and would be con- \ eidered when the buildings grant waß . appropriated. It bad been resolved to : consider the enlargement of the Methven ' schoolroom whenever funds were available. The Clerk of Works had reported that none of the filters which had been tried had been found quite satisfactory. Two letters having reference to the crowding of the Walbham road sohool and the slack attendance at the Opawa school, although the two schools were but half a mile distant from each other, were read by the Chairman. Ib was decided to refer these letters to theWaltham road Sohool Committee for their information. The report was then adopted. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The Appointments Committee reported as follows: — The appointment of Misß C. Watson at Greta Valley waß recommended to the Board. It waa determined to promote Mr S. Smith to the position at Rangiora hitherto held by Mr Schneider, and to invite applications from male or female candidates for the vacancy thus made. The Burwood School Committee applied for a pupil teacher. It was resolved to defer the matter till receipt of the quarterly returns. A letter was received from the Rolleston School Committee expressing their intention to adhere to their recommendation, and asking that Mr O'Shaughnessy might be employed as temporary master till the permanent appointment was settled. It was resolved to appoint Mr O'Shaughnessy temporarily, as requested. Another month's leave of absence was granted to Miss Ingram, at Doyleston, on half-pay, on the ground of ill health. The question of a general revision of the scale of salaries was considered, and also a proposed extension adapting ib to the case of Lyttelton. It was decided not to make any alteration at present. The following appointments were re-commended;--Addington—Mr W. . K. Seay, head master; Lowcliffe — Miss M. Rutledge, mistress; Papanui — Miss M. Do-ds, infant mistress, Mr W. Balch,, assistant master; Christchurch East— Mr W. G. Cohorn, assistant master ; Richmond —Mr A. Gray, assistant master; Southbridge —Mr Jc R. Sinclair, assistant master; Porter's Pass (aided school)— Mr H. Dumaresq, master. Teddington— The resignation of Mr C. Exall was received and accepted. Glentunnel— A letter was received from the Committee, asking that the opening of the school at Coalgate might be deferred till after the examination in November next. Ib was resolved that the opening of the school should not be delayed any longer. The report waß adopted. A supplementary report, dealing with the Teddington and Little Abaloa schools, was considered in Committee. NORMAL SCHOOL. The Normal School Committee reported :, — The average attendance for the last week was— Boys 303, girls 306, infants 29? ; total 906. It was resolved to send notices to the parents of several children reported for irregularity of attendance. Leave of abaenoe for three months. <>n account of serious illness, was allowed to Miss M. Taylor, a student teacher. Some improvements in the lavatory (.._ the infants* school were authorised.. The reports \?aa adopted.

BOLLESTON SCHOOL. _ The Board went into Committee to cos eider matters in connection with the Rolle3ton School. Correspondence and petitions were read, and a deputation received. It was resolved to invite fresh applications for the position of master at the school. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr M'Farlane was appointed Cdmmls*sioner of the district of Alford Forest pro tern. 'Ihe use of Temperance books in the school was considered. Mr Joyce moved tbe further postponement of a decision to allow all the members of the Board to read Dr Richardßon's book. Mr Meredith moved an amendment in favour of introducing the book into the schools. Tue motion was carried. Ib waß resolved to uuspend tbe standing orders during the Parliamentary session, and hold the meetings of the Board fortnightly. Permission was granted members of Parliament to absent themselvea from the Board during the session. The meeting adjourned after the transaction of routine business.
