An apology was made for Councillor Keix's absence. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read : — From Mr TJlricb, drawing attention to the insanitary condition of the Borough, gravel pit. Mr Ulrioh supported his letter inpetßon, and Councillor Blaokett endorsed his complaint. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to act at once. From Mr J. Fulton, calling attention to the condition of the Northbrook creek. It was decided to clean out the oreek from George street to Victoria Btreet. FIBB PBBVENTION. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, stating that, while agreeing with the motive of the Council in not allowing the fire engines to go outside the Borough, the Brigade totally disapproved of the restriction, being of opinion that it should be left to tbe discretion of the chief officer of the Brigade as to where the engines should go. In a letter of a subsequent date the Brigade suggested that the Council should make a charge of JBff . for the Bteam fire engine going bu&ide the Borough, and that the men accompanying it should receive 2s an hour, only a sufficient number to work the engine being taken, the horse hire and other necessary expenses to be taken out of the .£5. It-was mentioned that the engines had attended eight firee outside the Borough during the laßt two years, and hall received £21 6b as donations. ° , After considerable discussion, Councillor Dobßon gave notice of motion — "That; the resolution of July 15, 'That the Council must decline to allow the nee of the" fire engines .outßide the Borough/ be rescinded." The Brigade suggested that a flre^weU should be sunk in King street north, near the rail way linej ako that the Council should put bridges over the side channels opposite the fire- wells to permit bt the engines being backed up to the wells. • The Counoil's Fire Prevention Committee waa instructed to report upon* the suggestions. - ■ BATBS. The Clerk reported that rates to the amountxf JS2G4> were still outstanding.
