INVERCARGILL, Feb. 23. A fire occurred at the waterworks at four o'clock thia morning. It broke out in the storeroom of the engine house, a large brick building. The Brigade succeeded in extinguishing it before any serious damage was done. The roof was burnt and the storeroom gutted, but the valuable machinery was only scorched. The damage is about _3200. There was no insurance. No _toppage occurred in pumping up the town supply. The Corporation had had a night watchman on the premises, but retrenched him a month ago. It is believed that the fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of cotton waste.
