CANADA.

The statement that General Harrison, who will succeed Mr Cleveland in the Presidency of the United States, will urge the annexation of Canada vigorously, has caused considerable excitement in the Dominion, and has given the Liberal politicians of the country, most of whom are annexationists, renewed hope of carrying their favourite measure. In the opinion of those who are well acquainted with the temper of the people of Canada, annexation will never be seriously ontertained. A fatal disease, known as anthrax, is making serious havoc among herds of cattle near Calgaey, in the North-west I territory. The Canadians dread lest the British Government should order the slaughter of their cattle immediately upon landing in England. Such a course would greatly affect the Domiuion cattle trade. The annexation resolution introduced in the United States Congress by Mr Butterworth on Dec. 13 has. created some sensation in Canada. The Press of the Dominion consider the proceedings insulting. The Dominion Government received an offer from the London manager of the Orient Steamship Line on Nov. 28, to build three steamships, each of 7500 tons, to Bteam not less than twenty knots, to carry the Canadian mails from Halifax to Plymouth, England, in five days.
