ITALY.
A sensation has been caused in Borne by | f the refusal of the Pope to bless a number 1
of medajs and relics sent to him by Irish priests for the Papal benediction before distribution in Ireland. In refusing to perform the act, the Pope sternly said, " I cannot bless them. The people of Ireland are disobedient ; they seem to prefer the gospel of Dillon and O'Brien to the Gospel of Jesus Christ." It; was officially announced, on Dec 13, that the Pope never intended to leave Home. It is announced that a large popular penny paper is to be started in Italy, to enlighten the lower classes in regard to the Papacy. The leading articles will be written in the Vatican. The Boston Pilot, on Dec. 3, published a Bpecial telegram from Rome, saying that the Vatican positively denies the allegation that Cardinal Gibbons, of Baltimore, was instructed to congratulate General j Harrison on his election to the Presidency { of the United States, on the ground that { Catholic interests would be safe under his j administration. It is denied by the Rome correspondent of the London Ttjues that the Pope has authorised Catholics to vote at the Italian elections.
