Stanhope, in a letter to the Press, says the Imperial Conference fraa unanimous as to the necessity of tinity upon defence and other questions of like import which are rapidly ripening; Mr Gladstone modifies his recent •utterances with regard to the temporal status of the Pope. He states that he is not desirous of \ setAng J &6 temporal power restored, feat is anxious that the Papal prestige should be maintained. It is expected that the Committee of Kational Defence will recommend the immediate construction of many iroaidads and fast cruisers, for the purpose of bringing up the Havy to saadegpte strength. ,
