POLICE COURT.
CHEISTCHUKCH. This Day. (Before B. Westenra and A. G. Howland, Esqs.) DjBtTNKENirEss. — Airiy Eosa was charged with drunkenness and attempting to commit suicide in the river at Oxford terrace. Sergeant Wilson said that at 11.10 p.m. yesterday the police received a telephone message from Dr Moorhouse to say that a woman waß in the river near his place. She afterwards went to the Hospital, and had to be forcibly removed from the place. There was no doubt she was suffering from the effects of drink. Accused said she was in trouble about her boy, who had to appear at the Supreme Court. Accused was remanded for three days for medical treatment.
Alleged Larceny. — Charles Billson, alias Charles Bilston, was charged with the larceny of a bicycle, value .£lB, the property of Greve Brun, of 172, Colombo street, on Sept. 23. Complainant e&id. he recognised the bicycle in Court as his property. He left it outside his stationer's shop in Colombo street, at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23. He missed it at 8 p.m., and having made search for it could noc find it. It was worth about £18. He bought it from Mr Oates in March last. He recognised the machine by it having had a new backbone pub into it. Saw it next day in Mr Oatea' shop. Do not know prisoner. He had no authority to take the bicycle. To accused : The bicycle was standing outaido the shop door, and not fastened up. Did not see you take it. Was told that the bicycle was in Oates' shop. Nicholas Oates said he was a bicycle maker, of 114, Colombo street. Witness sold the bicycle in court to Brun in March last. On Friday last, at 8.30 p.m., accused came to witness* shop and asked him if he waa "open to buy a bicycle." Witness went out on the footpath and saw the machine now in court. Accused said he wouldn't bring it inside. He had a nasty fall off it, and hurt his leg. Witness took the machine inaide, and, .recognising it, asked accused where he got it from. Accused answered that he had bought it in Lyttelton from a man in Lis line of business of the name of Gilchrist, and had had ifc for two or three years. Told him that i\ belonged to witness, and he must not take it away, and that he had stolen it. Accused stuck to hi 3 story, and offered to get proof that it was his. Accused then left the shop, and witness kept the machine. Witness was cross-examined at some length by prisoner as to his identity, but his evidence on the subject was unshaken. Christopher Wilson, a young man who happened to be in Oates' shop at the time accused brought the bicycle in, identified him as the man. Robert Neill said he arre3ted the accused on Saturday lost on the present charge. Accused asked if the Magistrate could deal with the case. Accused was cautioned in the usual way, and reserved his defence, and was then committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court.
