4» THE U.S.S. MOHICAN'S REPORT. [Peb Press Absociatiob.} AUCKLAND, Atratrsi 18. The Intelligence Officer of the U.S,S. Mohican forwards the following to iha Press, in compliance with instructions received in July from Admiral M'Cauley : The American corvette Mohican, Commander Day, made a special trip to the island formed by the volcanic action since* October last. At a distance of 15 miles steam could be discovered rising in the air. On arriving at the- spot the Mohican, steamed round, talcing, bearings of its position and sketches and photographs of its contour and appearance. The island is of circular shape, 230 ft high, and a mile and a half wide. It has a steaming crater on the east side j to the extreme west there ia noticeable a wreath of smoke. On takingsoundings, good anchorage was found oa the north side. The island ia in long. 175deg 20min W., lat. 20deg 20min S. It is situated 4S miles N.N.W. of Nukualofa. The impression conveyed by its appearancewas that the bed of the ocean had been uplifted out of the water.
