Lyttelt on Borough Council.

♦ The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening in the Council Chambers ; present — The Mayor, Mr Adam Chalmers (Chairman), and Councillors Stinson, Macdonald, Eeed, Dimond, Fyfe, M'Donald, and Allwright. The receipts for the fortnight were reported as .£B9 18s 7d. Correspondence was read : — ' From agents of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Limited, asking that their account might be made a monthly one. Granted ; and it was further decided to allow a discount of 20 per cent on any accounts for water amounting to over .£SO, to one single vessel. From Mr Bruce, Secretary to the Lyttelton Land Sports Committee, asking for the use of London street on Jan. 1. It was decided to grant the rcjuest on the usual conditions. Accounts to the amount of .£159 8s lOd ■were passed for payment. Councillor Merson was granted leave of absence. The report of the Engineer at the Pumping Station was, on the motion of Councillor Allwright, seconded by Councillor Stinson, referred to the Water Supply Committee. Councillor Fyfe moved, and Councillor Eeed seconded — " That the name of the present Mayor be added to the list of Committees on which the late Mayor acted." The Bathing Committee reported that the bathing-place was now completed. Five tenders were opened for the building of a bathing-shed at Sandy Bay, and that of Sutton and Weastall, ,£lB 10s (the lowest) was accepted. Councillor Allwright remarked that the bathing-place was now largely used, and he looked forward to the time when the Council would be able to further improve it. The Mayor said that Dr Macdonald had attended to any Charitable Aid cases since the accident to the late Dr Kouse. Councillor Allwright said that there was a feeling in Heathcote Valley in favour of the incorporation of that place with the Borough of Lyttelton. This he thought was impossible. But more power was needed by the Council from Parliament to deal with the water supply there. Councillor Allwright referred to the loss suffered by the town by the death of the ' late Dr Eouse — one who had occupied the chair of the Council for several years, besides having been a Councillor of many years' standing, and a greatly-respected citizen of the Borough. He would move that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Eouse and family on their severe loss. Councillor T. M'Donald.aud the Mayor also spoke feelingly on the matter, and the motion was carried nem con. Three tenders were received for the lease of the Victoria Dining Eooius for seven years — George Harris, £Z3 JOs per annum; F. Sanderson, ,£3O; C. E. Eadcliffe, .£55. After some discussion, the

matter waa referred to the Estates Committee, who held a meeting, and accepted Mr Harris' tender. A dispute re Forresters' boundary was referred to the Estates Committee. The meeting then adjourned.
