SIR JULIUS YOGEL. REMISSION OF DEATH SENTENCE. THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS.

[FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. Sir Julius Yogel appears to be steadily regaining his health, and is looking more like himself than at any time since his return to New Zealand. He is taking carriage exercise, and was to-day present at the Island Bay racecourse. I understand he will not be able to leave for the Waiwera Hot Springs before the middle of December, so that his visit to Christchurch can hardly take place before the new year. The Hon J. A. Tole, Minister of Justice, was to leave for Auckland to-day, and will probably be absent for about ten days. Ministers propose to recommend to His Excellency that the sentence of imprisonment for life passed upon the man Smyth, found guilty of the murder of his wife some time ago, be remitted. The ncgociations arising out of the sanction of the House to the new mail contracts and subsidies are progressing towards completion, and the presence of Mr Coster in Wellington is all that is now necessary to clinch matters in reference to the direct service. That gentleman is expected here in the course of a few days. With respect to the South Sea Island service, there is a movement afoot among commercial men to orga- j nise a sort of holiday excursion trip ' to the Islands on the occasion of the j first trip under the subsidy arrangements, j and Government will be asked to grant : facilities to members of Chambers of Com- ' merce, &c, to enable them to visit the Islands at somebody else's expense, in j order that they may make themselves ! acquainted with the commercial prospects and general outlook in the South Seas ' from a New Zealand view-point. ;
