POPPENS AND M'GRATH.

'WELLINGTON, Sept. 15. The hotel absconders, Poppens and M'Grath, returned last night by the Wakatipu from Sydney. Poppens was charged before the Magistrates to-day and remanded until Wednesday. Accused was unable to obtain bail. M'Grath will be brought up to-morrow. The Aorangi has two locomotives for the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company. The Champion Copper Company are about to drive 300 feet further along the lode. GREYIIOUTH, Sept. 15. The Borough Council held a special meeting this afternoon to protest against Government ordering the dredge away. A resolution, protesting strongly against the dredge being taken away at such a time, was passed unanimously, and a copy was ordered to be sent to the Minister of Public Works and Messrs Guinness, Menteath and the Hon H. H. Lahmann. The Penpont will have to discharge some of her coal before floating. The last flood has thrown up a shingle bank opposite the wharf where vessels usually swing, and thus narrowed the available 6pace considerably.
