Licensing Committees.
CHEISTCHUECH SOUTH-EAST. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee for the district of Christchurch South-east was held at the City Council Chambers at noon to-day ; present — Messrs J. Anderson (Chairman), R. Westenra, R. Struthers, J. D. Macpherson. Inspector Pender attended on behalf of the police, and presented his report on the licensed houses in the district, which was of" a satisfactory nature. Mr Weston applied for a transfer of the license of the Railway Hotel, from Henry Garland to T. I. Aiken, which was granted. Mr Loughrey obtained a transfer of the license of the Queen's Hotel, from Mary E. Smith to John Macnamara. Mr Austin applied for an extension for one month of the permit granted to David Mitford Marshall to carry on the business of the Terminus Hotel, in order to allow of the forms necessary to obtain a transfer of the license from the present licensee, who was bankrupt and had absconded. Inspector Pender said that he was informed that Mr Buckley, whose application for the license had previously been opposed by the police, was in the house, and was really acting as manager. If he was going to manage the business, the police would object very strongly. Mr Austin said that, as far as he was instructed, Mr Buckley was not going to manage the house. The freehold of the building belonged equally to Mr Buckley, Mr D. M. Marshall and the bankrupt, whose share was now vested in the Official Assignee. The present applicant had stated that he had the management of the business. Inspector Pender said that the police would object to Buckley taking any part in the management of the house. Mr Austin would give him particular instructions to abstain from doing so. The Chairman said that it would be well for the police to closely watch the place between the present time and the time when a permanent transfer would be applied for. In answer to a question from a member of the Committee, Mr Austin said that the whereabouts of the former occupant of the house was unknown. He was supposed to have gone to San Francisco. Mr Struthers remarked that it was Btated he had been seen in Auckland. After a brief consultation with the other members, the Chairman announced that the permit held by Mr D. M. Marshall would be extended; but that if Mr Buckley took any part in the management of the house the permission would be removed, and perhaps Mr Pender would keep his eye on the place in the meantime. The Committee then adjourned.
