DEOWNED— NAME UNNKOWN.
NATIVE LOCAL OPTION. AUCKLAND, Mat 14. A man, name unknown, engaged by Mr Henry, landlord of the Lichfield Hotel, was drowned whilst driving across a creek between Lichfield andWaton. The buggy and horses were found stuck in the creek, but there were no traces of the driver. A deputation consisting of the Hon H. Chamberlin, Messrs T. B. Hill, C. 0. Davis, and A. Cox, Secretary of the Gospel Temperance Mission, waited upon the Governor to-day with a Native petition, 're the King Country being proclaimed against the liquor traffic. The Governor promised that the petition should have due consideration. The petition is signed by Wahanui, Rewi and other influential chiefs.
