"THE HORRORS OF WAR."

There is a good story current in oon* nection with the late Invercargill Review, the humour of which is too rioh to be allowed to sink into oblivion with* out *a passing notice. Several members of a certain Dunedin corps were billeted in a hotel, the sign of which shall be nameless. A joint of meat was Berved up at meBS the first day, which Bfcruok the men as not being particularly fresh, and accordingly very little was partaken of. The same joint was placed on the table fche following day, bufc met with no patronage, in consequence of some of thoso who had partaken of it the previous day having become unwell. Rapacious Boniface served it up for fche third time, bufc the long-suffering warriors were exasperated, and doterminod to consign the meat— which, by-the-bye, was more alive than dead— to its last resting place. Grimly and sternly tho object was placed in a winding-sheet, and a band, playing the " Dead March in Saul," followed by a number of men from -othor corps who had heard of the affair, conveyed it to a quiet spot, and, with all military honours, interred it. Getting rid of suoh a tough customer had such a lively effect upon the procession that it marched through the town with banners flying, tho band striking up "The girl I left behind mo." Before tho Volunteers ieft Invercargill a resurrection took place undor cover of night, and the noxt morning the eyes of the citizens of Invercargill woro greeted with the unusual sight of a joint of living beef Btrung up on a flagstaff on one of the principal buildings in Tay street. The feelings of tho landlord on perceiving it can be better imagined than described. — Otago Daily Times.
