Apbil 16. In reply to a numerously signed requisition, the Mayor haß convened a public meeting for next Monday night, at the Athenaum, to take into consideration the desirability of establishing a public library for Wellington, in accordance with tho terms of the Public Libraries Acfc, 1869, and tho Public Libraries Act. 1876.
A prize fight took place at Feilding, Manawatu, laat Sunday. It lasted one hour and forty minutes, fourteen rather long rounds having been fought. The beaten man was heavily punished. Messrs Macandrew and Whitmore have returned. The Hinemoa has gone for Mr

A man named John O'Connor was arrested this afternoon on a charge of obtaining money from one William Hodgkins, by representing himself to be a detective. There are several other charges against him. f His Excelloncy the Governor has accepted the position of President of the New Zealand Commission for the Sydney Exhibition, and Dr Hector has been iappointed Vice-president aud Executive Commissioner. His Excellency has informed Mr Callis, the Secretary, that during his visit to the south, he should make full enquiries as to the progress made by tho locajl Committees. ' /His Excellency Sir Hercules Kobinson, paving received by the last mail his full coinf mission as Governor, will be sworn in tomorrow, at noon, by his Honor Mr Justice Richmond, in the verandah of Government House, with the customary formalities. A guard of honour of the Armed Constabulary will be present, and a salute will be fired by H.M.S. Emerald. The oath previously taken by his Excellency was as " administrator of s the Government/ and not as Governor. The ball to the Governor to-night is a great success. There are not to be either toasts or speeches.
