AMUSEMENTS

THEATRE EOYAL,

As was to bo expected, the theatre wa» crowded last night. The performance consisted of Shakespeare's " Richard III," and was as praiseworthy as the previous efforts of the present company. The leading role was taken by Mr Creswk:lr, whose conception of it was ajmirab'e. Mr Burford played Henry VI. with excellent tiute, and Mr Vincent made a vigorous Richmond. Miss Ashton us Lady Anne was fairly effective. Mrs George Darrell made tho moot of the part of Queen Elizabeth. Miss Annie Mayor and Miss Bessie Hill gave interesting and efficient renderings of the role of tho Prince of Wales and Duke of York respectively. The alarm of fire, which was rung out by the fire-bells during the scone in which tho Queen mother parts from her children, created much confusion in thehouse, and somewhat militated against the success of those who at the time occupied the stage. The dresres were many of them historically correct, conspicuous among them being that of Richard at Bosworth. The scenery, however, was not deserving of the same encomiums. Mr Croswick was called before the curl ain after tho third and after tho fifth act, and Mr Vincent also after the fifth act. To-night " Othello" will be repeated, with the same powerful cast with which it was produced on Saturday week, and tho performance will bo under the patronage and in the presence of the Stewards and oflicers of the Canterbury Jockey Club.
