[BPBOIAL.J Afbil 14. To-day has been generally observed as a holiday, but the weather has been wet and miserable.
Mr William Bowler, an old Wellington settler, formerly well known in Canterbury, died rather suddenly on Saturday. A boy named Edwin King met with a serious accident at the Wairarapa yesterday, He was riding one horse and leading another, whon suddenly the animal which he was leading began kicking. The boy received a blow from the hoof of the horse which broke hia leg below the knee. King was employed in the telegraph department at Carterton. The number of passengers carried by the Taiaroa was 88 ; 16 in excess of her complement.
Steps are being taken to form a branch of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society in this city. The brigantine Anthous, which arrived here from Melbourne yesterday, has been chartered for two years to carry coal from Grevmouth to this and other ports of Now Zealand.
