This Day. QUARTERLY SITTING. (Before Messrs Gk I*. Mellish, Q-. _. Lee, and R. J. S. Harman, Licensing Commissioners.) The Warwick , Hotel. — Mr Wynn Williams ap_lied on behalf of Mr W. R. Smith for leave to sell in the back part of his establishment, while the present hotel was being replaced by a new one. From the plans it appeared tt lat the proposed new building would be. a very handsome one. New; Applications.— Mr Wynn- Williams applied for a license to. be granted to J. H. Andrews, of the Ferry road, who proposed to build. A person stepped into the box and Baid that he had an objection to make, but as he had nofc given fche necessary notice, the objecijecfcion was not all qwed. The Court however refused fco grant; the license, on the ground t— at at present there was no necessity for an hotel at the place indicated. — Mr Thomas Main applied for a license for J. M. Sitzgerald, of Harper street, Newtown. The same application had been made for six or seven times, bufc hitherto without avail. Mr Thomas said he •was prepared with evidence to show that the house was a necessity, There was now a station and a policeman in the district, who could see that fche house was well conducted. Mr Izard said he was instructed to oppose the granting of the {license, and he presented a petition signed by 40 people against fche license being granted. Mr Thomas said thafc lairing the aggregate of signatures that had been attached fco petitions afc various times in favour of the house they could not number less than 700. The petition he now presented was signed by 887. Mr Thomas said that among the persons who signed the opposition petition was one who put down his age at 184. Mr Mellish remarked fchat he was evidently a man of experience. Mr Izard said that fche fact of the neighbourhood having done without an hotel for 184 years was a pretty good proof fchafc ifc was nofc required. The Stench decided fco refuse fche application. — — -John Hughes, of Victoria road, North-east belt, made a personal application. Mr Thomas Said he appeared on behalf of Qualmer, who Was applying for a license for a house in the tame di strict. He should like to have both applications heard together. The Bench declined to grant the application. Mr Thomas then made his application on behalf of Henry Qualmer, of the North-east belt, Application refused.— Mr Wynn Williams applied for a license on behalf of W. Letford, Selwyn street, Addington, and presented a numerously signed petition in favour of it. The Bench refused to grant the'application before fchehouse was built. — Mr George Harper applied for a license on behalf of John Mumford, Madras street and South Belt, known as the Grosvenor Hotel. Certain additions would be made to ifc immediately. The Bench said thafc when those additions were made they would be prepared to grant the amplication. — The came counsel applied on behalf of C. jaingenstein, of the Provincial Larder, Cashel street. Application at once refused. — Mr Thomas made application on behalf of P. S. Pryde, Lincoln road, Riccarfcon. The Bench observed fchat the house was very near to Feathers', and ifc would nofc feel disposed to* grant fche license. Mr Thomas said he would like to make certain observations. 3f counsel were nofc allowed fco give explanations wifch regard to the houses for which they applied for licenses, then ifc was no use of them appearing there afc all. He presented fcwo petitions, one of which was signed by over 300 persons. The hotel was near the .-Bale yards, and fche want of a license there was very^ greatly felt. Afc the present time the applicant held a license in connection wifch the yard, but he was giving fchafc up. Mi* Harper also appeared in support of fche applicatwn. The applicant was put into the box, and said that at present there was no accommodation near theyards. He had often on sale nights been obliged fco send away more than a dozen people because he could nofc provide them . with beds. The Bench declined to grant the Keense.— Mr Stanley applied for a wine and beer license for Thomas Russell, of Colombo road south/and Baid within a radius of a quarter of a mile there were 2000 inhabitants, and no inn whatever to supply them. The Bench reminded Mr Stanley thafc if the license was granted, wine and beer could only be supplied to boarders. The application, however, would be refused. — Mr H. Loughnan applied for a license on behalf of Harry Sfcace of Springston. The house was nofc at present builfc. The Bench said the police report was that the house was not required. Mr Loughnan discovered that the very first signature on the petition was that of the parish clergyman. The Bench observed that the house whs nofc yet built, and therefore fchey could nofc grant the application. Mr Loughnan said he would _ke to have an expression of opinion. The Bench replied that the opinion then . would be against the license. Mr Harper applied on behalf of William Savage, of the Stanmore road, for a wine and spirit license. _ Tr Cowlishaw opposed. Mr Harper said nd ■notice of opposition had been filed. Mr Cowliehaw said it was aaot necessary under the circumstances. ' He would show that a house was nofc wanted an the neighbourhood. He appeared himself as an objector, and as solicitor for fche other objectors. Mr Huvper said the house was nob yefcin -existence, but the plans were all ready. Mr -Cowlishaw said fche fact of the matter was, ' they wanted to make this place a Sunday tea•gardens. Application refused, the Bench de -dining to give any opinion as to whether or •not thuve was a necessity for a house afc fche Spot indicated. — John Somers re-applied for *.a wine and beer license for a house afc the •corner of Colombo and Russell streets. Application refused.
