LINCOLN.

Working Committee— Messrs Wm, Tod, John Wills, D. Dunn, H. White, and W. Prebble. _ „ , This annual matoh took plaoe on Friday, in a paddock belonging to Mr 0. W". Ladbrook, situated on the Prebbleton and Linooln road, about half way between tinooln and Prebblo. ton. The paddook at first placed at the disposal of the Committee was found, after the entries had been taken, to be inadequate for the number of ploughmen 5 consequently the double furrow men had to adjourn to the further end of the next paddook, nearly half-a-mile away, thus debarring them from a oonaidowble rtinoant of the publio criticism. Of fcfae ground in either paddooka we oannot say muoh, for it was rough, brittle, wet, and had also been orostfploughed, whiohbyno moans improved its suitability for prize ploughing. The weather up to about twelve o'olook was all that oould bo desired, but from that hour a regular Southerly buster blew, which made many wish they had never ventured out, and no doubt heartily; wished themselves home again. The wind was cutting in the oxtreme, and with the exoep-, tion of a long gorse fence there was literally no shelter. Thero was a bitoh in tho arrange- ; monts for the ground, and an impromptu booth , was provided by Mr J. W. Anderson, of PrebWeton, on a twenty-four hours' notioo. The oustomary dinner after tho matoh in the evening fell to tho ground, the Committee's pro- , paratians having, somehow or other, been; frustrated at the last moment. We were unable to learn who was at fault, but some-, body was most deoidedly to blame. Taking the ploughing as a whole, it cannot be said that it was so brilliant aB we have; seen in previous years in this district, Even tho ploughing of the two ohampions Ladbrook and Dunn did not shino, especially that of the former, who w«n somewhat easily boaten by Dunn. Of oourse great allowanoe should be made for the bad state of the; ground. In the double furrow olass, good, sound, useful work was made, the flerings and the finishes being the weak points. In the seoond-olass the ploughing generally was rough, although thero was some useful work. A great deal of tho false out was notioeable in this an well as in the first-class. It is a matter of surprise, knowing how this sort of ploughing is disliked among the farmers in general, that the Committee did not striotly prohibit false out. In some oases yesterday, in the second-class there was as muoh aB two' inohes of false cut, whioh points to the oonoluaion that it is by no means dying out among ploughmon. The boys' work, with the exoeption of the first prize taker, was deoidedly not good. VIK9T CLASS, Judges-Messrs John Gebbio (the Bays), ■William Boas (Kafopol Island), J. Walls (Kaiapol Inland).:

The awards in this olass entirely concur with our opinion. Dunn mado an oxoellonti flering and ploughed strong throughout) finishing well. Ladbrook's flering was rather! cramped, the body was well packed and neat but rather flat. The two last furrows wore rather large, and the flnwh might have been; better. JPrebblo showed good ploughing.! Another year he will be found hard to beat > in faot many judgos were of opinion that he; should have received, sooond prize. Hoj finished clean and woll. J dotjbib pimnow oxiss. j Judgeß same as in First Class.

With the exception of the flering, taking it throughout, this ploughing was very good. Chisnall had rather the beßt of it, but was dofloiont in the packing and finish. Johnston made a bad start, but his ploughing afterwards was good. Harris ploughed fairly through* out. . SECOND CLASS. Judgos— Moßßrs J. Pannett (Dunsandol), David Scott (Doyloston), Wm. Gilmour (Green Park;, J. N. Ovorton (Stmnd'a Road).

Prebblemado a good fiering, but it wasrathor crooked. The body of the work wub woll paokod and very oloan, but ft rather deep finish wttß rtmdo. Wills made very neat looking work, but exhibited a good deal of false out, The grass showed a good deal in the florin g | tho flnieh was good. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth prize-takers wore very even in the work, and it must havo boon a difficult matter for the judges to havo arranged them in ordor. The remaindor in this olass were very poor, exhibiting but indifferent ploughing throughout. i hots' class. ' Jndges samo as In Second Class. <

With the ttlc^tibn 6i babble's ploughing whioh was very gopd for a youngster, thp ploughing of the boys was not up to the mar^. ProbWe, will, with pwoful. attention, a»a%e >' good plonghman in yeaw to ootne. i Subjoined is the priie list i—

Simmons, Christohuroh, for tho worst ploughman on the field, but tho Committee vory wisely deoidod that this prize should not bo awardod. The private swoop referred to in tho advortisoment turned out a hoax, tho well known dealer never putting in an appearance. Some unkind pooplo said that he failed in his trials. His opponent struok out his floring, whioh was rather shaky, and showed that the plough handlo hud not been his forte for some time past, but on account, of tho small quantity ploughed, it was not possible to judge how he would have got on afterwards. Ho intends olaiming the prize, and dovoting it to oharitablo purposes.
