A CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION. TO THE EDITOR 01 THE STAR. Sib, — A few days since, I noticed a letter in the Lyltelton Times, having reference to the desirability of a central railway station for the city of Christchurch, pointing to the neighbourhood of -the Drill Shed as an eligible site, and at the same time offering a few valuable suggestions for public consideration. - I also notice v Bumble's " would-be sarcoatic effusion in the Canterbury Times ot today, on which, with your kind permission, I will make a passing remark or two. "Bumble" has evidently stumbled on a popular subject without being aware of it, as he and his presumed country friends must indeed, to use his own words, be "uncommon green " if he or they for one moment suppose that the people of this city and province are not almost to a man identified with "Citizen" in his; wiabed-for removal of the present passenger station. It is quite puerile to talk about the present station being only half a mile from us, which we can reach for sixpence; and again, of ignoring the utility of having railways to our own doors, &c. Why, we know, moßt of us, that this is not the fact, as we have to walk half a mile or more before we c*n secure the privilege of his sixpenny shoe-lift; and where, pray, Mr "Bumble," should our railway station be, if our convenience were consulted, unless at our own doors ? ....... Undoubtedly the public have a right to twit the powers that fbe with' respect -to this great recognised want, and I have not the least doubt but that our worthy Superintendent and Council will r at a very early period of the* approaching session, 'take this matter into their anxious consideration. It is not now 'a question of convenience, but one of means, and I feel assured that " Citizen's " logic will manifest, itself from time to time until some genius of the Provincial Council indicates the .means .whereby His spirit shall find a fitting resting-place, and when " Bumble " and his fraternity shall have been made .to walk . tha plank without danger to their watertight!}. : ■ - ■-•- Your obedient servant, HOPEFUL. Christchurch, May 2i, 1870.
