Since her last trip she has had a thorough overhaul, her cabin has been enlarged, and she can now accommodate 20 passengers. The P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Cp.'s s.s. Tararua arrived in harbour yesterday morning at 1.25 from Melbourne, via Otago. Sailed from Hobson's Bay at 5.30 p.m. on the 28th ult., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 7.30 p.m., passing Swan Island on the following afternoon. Experienced strong westerly gales with heavy S.W. sea on the run across, arid arrived at the Bluff at 7.30 a.m. on the 3rd. The engines having been eased during the night, landed 100 tons cargo and 15 passengers, and left at 5 p.m., arriving at Otago daylight ,next morning. Cleared. Otago Heads at 9 p.m. on Saturday, arriving as above. On the 30th the Tararua spoke the Royal Dane, from Melbourne to London, in lat. 45.50, long. 158.16 E! fche desired to be reported at Lloyd's. We are indebted to Mr Adams, purser, for full files. The Tararua sails this morning ■with the Panama mail. to Sea. — We are glad to say "that the missing man, Thomas White, has returned. We are indebted to Captain McLean for the following particulars: — It appears that on Thursday afternoon, White was unmooring Mr Hay's whaleboat, and as he poled her in to get the oars, &c, so as to ferry over to • Holmes Bay for a cargo, a south-west puff caught the boat and carried it off shore. He tried to make Holmes point, but when only three boats lengths off the point, the wind drew off the hills and carried him into the middle of the bay, the boat drifting straight out. At 10 pm. he spoke the Courier, ketch, and told them he was adrift without, oars, anchor, or sails ; they must have thought he was j< sting for they held on their course and paid no attention to him. He cooeyed but they still kept on ; he then laid down and went to sleep for tne night. On Friday morning he found himself about ten miles outside the heads* The sea being calm, he got the stern sheets out and paddled the boat in two or three miles. About ten o'clock a breeze sprung up from the North-East, and •he then set the stern sh ets for a sail, which brought him a mile inside Pigeon Bay heads. Here he managed to get on the rocks, and hauling the boat up he slept in a cave all Friday night. He got into the boat on Saturday morning and paddled two or three miles up the bay, when he was seen by some of the inhabitants who went off to his assistance. •He saw the p.s. Betsy Douglas on Friday afternoon, but she was too far away to the northward for him to signal!) We may state also that the Randolph, scfiboner, was out in i search. She spoke the Courier, and was in- \ formed by them the boat was drifting to Kaiapoi. The wind, however, being light south-west outside, the current had driven the boat further to the eastward than Avas expected by the searchers, otherwise the vessels would have picked him up, for they went in the direction that a strong S.W. breeze would have driven him. Great praise is due to Captain McLean for his promptness in getting up steam and going in search, and also to Captain Gray, of the Randolph, schooner.
