Provincial Council. — By a Gazette, dated this day, the Provincial Council is further prorogued till Friday, Nov. 13. Political Cartoon. — The cleverly conceived and well .executed cartoon winch we described some time ago, lias been reproduced by Messrs Wheeler and Sons, of Christchurch. Theatre Royal. — Mr H. C. West, on behalf of Mr Wilson, has concluded arrangements for renting the Theatre Royal, and it is now expected that the new company will appear some day during next week. jfc Litkkary. — It is currently reported that 'pur contemporary, the Press, is about to pass into the hands of a Joint Stock Company, (limited). The Hon. Mr John Hall and the Hon. Mr Stafford are spoken of as prominent shareholders.
% s First Wool. — The Timaru Herald of yesterday informs us that the first wool for this season arrived last week at Messrs Miles and Co.'s store. It is from a small lot of wethers belonging to Messrs McPherson Bros., of Lake Tekapo,— shorn at Teniuka. Panama Mail. — The mail is expected to arrive to-morrow by the Lord Ashley. As usual, there is no notice on the Christchurch telegraph board that the Lord Ashley has, or has not, left Wellington. Perhaps those interested in this matter will personally represent it to Mr Hall when he comes down. Pun ltc House Licences. — We would remind intending applicants at the next licensing meeting, that Saturday, the 31st, is the last day for sending in the necessary forms. The justices will sit on the first Tuesday in December, and thirty clear days notice of application must be given to the Clerk to the Bench. Papanui. — The Returning Officer has received the writ for the return of a member for the Papanui district, the seat for which is vacant by the retirement of Mr Stewart. The nomination is fixed for November 11, and the 13th is named for the poll, if necessary. Mr Peacock is the only candidate at present in. the field. Lyttelton Election. . — Mr Humphreys has withdrawn from his candidature for Lyttelton, in the House of Representatives. The reasons assigned for this withdrawal show that M r Humphreys places the interests of the Middle Island far above any con,sideration of personal aggrandisement. \Accident. — A son of Mr Hadfield, Cathedral Square, had his leg broken a little above the ancle yesterday, at the gravel pit in Colombo Street South. The accident was caused by the fall of a quantity of gravel. The sufferer was at once removed to his home, where he was attended by Mr Prins, who succeeded in setting the leg. He is now progressing favourably. The Southland Railway Scandal. — The Ocago Daily Times of yesterday says : — Through the courtesy of the Commissioner of Police, we learn that Mr Aylmer, Mr Mackenzie, and Mr Sayers, charged with attempting to defraud. the Southland Government by tampering with the tenders for the construction of the Oreti Railway, have been committed for trial. Entertainment. — A social entertainment will take place in Palmer and Co's warehouse, Ferry Road, this evening, in aid of the Heathcote Parish Sunday School Fund. It is the second of the series, and a greatly improved programme is offered. Mr W. Montgomery, Deputy-Superintendent, will deliver the opening address, and amongst those who have promised readings are Messrs W. Reeves, J. Ollivier, Dr Willis, and the Ilev G. J. Cholmondeley. V*Quick Work. — The aTtesian well commenced on the west side of Cathedral Square, on Monday morning, and intended to supply the tank for street-watering purposes, was completed early yesterday afternoon. The depth to which the piping has been driven is 80 ft., and a splendid overflow capable of rising" 10 feet above the surface has been obtained. The second well was commenced immediately on conclusion of the first, and will probably be completed to-morrow. Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association. — Ameetingof the Council of this Association tookplaceyesterday at the Plough Inn, Kangiora. The following gentlemen were present: - Messrs M. Dixon (President), C. Young, C. Hilliard, C. Dudley, G. Bowron, J. Walls, J. Morrison, R. Chapman, W. Buss, J. E. Brown, and C. E. Dudley (Secretary). The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved that the annual show should take place on Friday, Nov. 13th, 18C8. The time for receiving entries of exhibits was extended until Nov. 2nd. It was resolved that tenders be invited for providing publicans' and refreshment booths on the ground, the secretary to accept the most favourable one ; the publicans' tender to state terms for supplying dinner to the judges and stewards. It was resolved that 200 posters be procured and circulated in the district. It was also resolved that a band be employed by the secretary to perform during the show. The secretary was instructed to write to various gentlemen, all non-residents in the district, requesting their services as judges for the several classes. The Council determined to leave the remaining preparations for the show to the stewards.
