CRICKET.
The match between Pa?t and Present Collegians and the U. C. C. C. was concluded on the Hagley Park ground on Saturday afternoon. The commanding lead taken by the former in the first day's play, togeth r with a general superiority over their opponents, rendered the chance of defeat heynnd even " the glorious uncertainty of cricket," and victory was a foregone conclusion on all sides. The day was again unfavourable, a strong north east wind entailing many discomforts on the field, and annoyance to both batsmen and bowlers. The wickets were pitched about the same time as on the first day, and some little improvement was perceptible in the ground. Cutting and rolling had scarcely commenced on Saturday week, but it i» now in full operation, and the enclosure will soon be in first-rate cricketing trim. The U.C.C.C. being so far in arrear, again handled the -will.w, but instead of their position inspiring them with increased care, it appeared to have a contrary effect, and so fast did the stumps fall, that ihe innings was little more than a. cons-ant walking to and fro from pavilion to wicket. The bowling was good, but still not sufficient to warrant the rapid displacement of the bails. Parkerson and Moore were the only two who bowled, and there is nothing in the batting or field ing to call for notice. Two of the U.C.C.C. team — Thompson and Chapman — were abs -nt, and two boys had to be pressed into the service to fill their places. The following are the detailed scores, and the wickets fell as follows: — One for 1 1, two for 13. three for 14, four for 16, five for 19, six for 24, seven for 26, eight for 34, nine for 39, and ten for 40.
The score made by the Collegians in their first innings was 126, and that of the U.C.I -.0 54. The former, thei efore, won in one innings and 32 runs to spare. A s rai eh match was afterwards played between sides chosen on the ground.
