[by submabine telegbaph.] "Wellington, Oct. 5, 7.10 p.m. A telegram received from Napier on Saturday night, intimated that the escaped prisoners were prepared to abandon hostile intentions, provided land was allotted them. But this afternoon, Mr McLean received a telegram to the effect that they and other Hau-haus were holding meetings, at which it was said, Colonel Whitmore's late defeat was utu for all Hau-hau defeats, excepting that at Omaraaui, for which the pakeha had yet to pay. The Rev. S. Williams has seen the King's edict, which had reached Hawke'a Bay j October was named for the rising. Mr Williams thinks that nothing will be done unless the Waikatos join. Mr Deighton, R.M., writes that the King's edict had also been received along the East Coast, which he thinks will precipitate matters. Altogether, affairs there were gloomy. Colonel Haultain with the troops left for Wanganui this morning. Major Edwards has gone to Eangitikei to examine into the state of the natives there, and to make arrangements for defence. #< X v Among the tenders for raising the Taranaki, one is to be submitted to a shareholders' meeting to-morrow, from Bloom and Carter, as follows : — £4000, one-fourth paid when the vessel is| slung, and the balance when raised and beached.
