General Assembly.
Friday, Oct. 2. [by submabiste telegbaph.] Mr Williamson withdrew a motion for retaining one regiment in favour of a motion introduced by Mr Stafford, of which the following is the substance : "That the removal of the 18th Regiin the present condition of the Northern settlements, would tend to increase the excitement of the rebellious Natives, and discourage the Friendlies. That the Colony has for years past fulfilled, and is virtually fulfilling conditions (£50,000 expenditure on Native government annually) required by Earl Carnarvon, and that the Governor be requested to retain the regiment now stationed in New Zealand." Mr Stafford said that the Governor would detain the regiment on thia resolution being passed. Two companies now in Wellington would be sent to Wanganui. Mr Fox seconded the motion at Mr Stafford's request. The discussion was not ended when the House adjourned for dinner. Mr Fitzherbert has had an attack of English cholera. He hoped to be able to leave in November, but would probably be detained two or three months longer.
