CAPITOL THEATRE

TUESDAY ONLY “Built for laughing purposes only,” is the comment of Irving Cummings, anent his latest picture, “Merry-Go-Round of 1938” appearing at the Capitol Theatre to-night. (There will be no screening tomorrow). The director was speaking of the riotous, near-slap stick sequences of the Buddy DeSylva production on which he laboured for three months. “Never had so much fun in my life,” he continued. “I -knew, when I agreed to direct the picture that it would be funny, but I never anticipated one-tenth of the crazy that all-comic cast would do!” DeSylva gave Cummings a cast which included Bert Lahr, Billy House and Jimmy Save, of the Broadway stage, and such tried Hollywood performers as Alice Brady, Mischa Auer and Louise Fazenda. “The results were—well, slightly colossal,” says Cummings with a grin. In addition to the crazy antics of the “Four horsemen of hilarity,” Auer, Savo, House and Lahr, “Merry-Go-Round of 1938” presents musical numbers written by Harold Adamson and Jimmie McHugh ; specialty, dances arranged and staged by Carl Randall, noted dance director, the sensational appearance of four-and-a-half-year-old Ann Beverly Welch, Dave Apollon and his orchestra, and numerous other surprising innovations.
