QUEEN CARNIVAL

SELECTION OF DISTRICT QUEENS

WESTERN QUEEN—MISS ROSA COONEY A meeting of residents in the Western District of Te Puke was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday night, Mr George Shaw being voted to the chair. Mr F. E. Gemming was appointed secretary and Mr D. Johnson assistant secretary, the former being also appointed treasurer. Five ladies were nominated for the position of West Queen candidate, and on a ballot being taken Miss Rosa Cooney was declared elected. Mr A. S. Cliffe was appointed to represent the West Committee on the Central Committee. v The following were appointed a committee : Mesdames Shaw, Anderson, Wilkie, Hunter, Cliffe, Powell, Washer, Misses M. Cliffe, W. Harris and E. Cuff, Messrs Johnson, Anderson, Persey, Taylor, Manning, Knight, A. Gordon, Hargreaves. Powell, Forester, Sweetman, Budge, and Evans. At a subsequent meeting of the committee it was decided to hold a “Hard-up” social on Friday

evening. Various matters in connection with the campaign were discussed, and a programme of events was approved. An offer by Mr Geo. Sweetman of a watch for a guessing competition was accepted with acclamation. It was decided that street stalls be held ip the main - street each Tuesday during the Carnival; also that social evenings be held in the Parish Hall at intervals. The following sub-committees were appointed : Social. —Mrs Powell, Misses E. Brown, E. Cuff, R. Cooney, Messrs Johnson, Manning (convener), Taylor, and Hargreaves. Stalls.—Mesdames Cliffe, Shaw and Washer, Messrs Evans (convener), and Forester. Competitions.- Mrs Shaw (convener), Messrs Cliffe, C. Anderson and D.Johnson. Concert. —Mesdames Anderson, Shaw, Powell, Miss W. Harris, Messrs Wilkie (convener), Powell and Anderson. Guessing Competitions.-Messrs Shaw (convener), Cuff, A. Gordon, G. Sweetman. The committee will meet each Tuesday evening in the Parish Hall during the Carnival. THE EASTERN QUEEN MISS MAUD KERR 7 A meeting of townspeople residing in the eastern portion of Te Puke was held m the Town Board Office on Tuesday, Mr H. E. Butcher presidi/g. Miss Maud Ke/r was selected as the Eastern Qflieen. Messrs D. VeLfoh and N. Gillan were appointed/secretaries. Tbe following committee was set up : —Messrs T. E. Palmer (chairman), Guthrie, J. Alexander, H. E. Butcher, W. Nioholls, A, F. Fox, G. Simpson, WVE. Hookey, J. Eocleton, Hawkins, R. Bell | Mesdames T. E. Palmer, G. Johnstone, 0. Bankart, H. Cashmore, A. Fox, A. Ryburn, J. Mahoney, Jackson, Granger, H. E. Butcher, R. Ball, Misses Cunningham, M. Jackson, Jamieson, Fox, Shepherd, B. Johnstone and Piaoe, Lwith power to add.

It was decided that the colours be green and gold. It was further decided that a stall be held in the main street on Saturday, 22nd inst., a card evening on Tuesday, 25th inst., and a Hard-up social on sth March. . It was arranged that surprise packets be left with Mrs Fox. The next meeting was fixed for Thursday, 27th inst.

MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE A meeting of the General Committee was held last night. There was a fair attendance, apd M!r Cuff was voted to the chair. The Secretary (Mr Wilkie) reported that the nomination of Miss Rosa Cponey had been received for the Western district, and Miss Maud Kerr had been nominated for the Eastern district. A suggestion had been received from the Country district that two queens be elected for that portion of the area - one from the east of Te Puke, and one from the west; that the funds raised by each be pooled a few days before the close of the Carnival, and the one who had raised the biggest quota be the Country Queen. — The meeting thought the suggestion a good one, but decided to await developments. ft was that the first day for hoisting the pennants denofe- j ing the position of the Queens, I ha March Ist, at 12 noon, this hour to be observed each day, | It was further decided that a trophy be presented to the Queen whose flag was at the top for the greatest number of days. On the suggestion of Mr Wilkie it was decided that a procession and confetti and streamer Taattle be held on the last day of the Carnival, the General Committee to make the arrangements. '..7. ■' ■ '■» CARNIVAL NOTES The Western Queen Committee will hold a “Hard up” dance in McDowell’s Hall tonight. Tomorrow evening a mock court in the Main Street will provide amusement for all. A Garden Fete is to be held by the East Committee of the Queen Carnival on the Bowling Club’s green on Wednesday, March sth, There will also be a Cabaret in McDowell’s Hall in the evening.

A meeting of residents in the \ Country district east of Te Puke will be held •in the Paengaroa Hall on Tuesday evening next, 25th inst, at 7.30. As the meeting is fol the purpose of selecting a Queen Candidate for this district it is earnestly requested that as many residents as possible attend.
