LIFE IN THE COUNTRY
t; { coif&rriQNS IMPROVED c ~ r‘ ' -a • A great Improvement has taken | ftlao© in the Matatbata distriot f ' pairing the past few years in the rj dslass of buildings on dairy farms, j cMdst Maces have a nioe garden,- j are kept j . /and’clean. It is quite an ( exception to see a roughly-kept j homestead even a long way from towns and railheads. Some of the V; cowsheds in use are almost as t good as some of the pioneer j * dwellings. In at least one shed e iipJdßteniSta ferns . are growing l, •. : in wire baskets suspended above t •.c-V the cows as they Are being ( milked', and electric kettles are ( i: provided for .the refreshment of ] the milkers.. Concrete yards are also, being extended, every year, j and even in the spring there is , not so much of the old time slush. < Whilst inspection no doubt has j had a great deal to do with this { desirable state of affairs, it can be ] £s:' haidthat the whole standard of , ii ' ' / living has gone up In the country , almost at the same ratio as in , v' * '"' the cities. Tennis courts and ; wireless - installations are quite , o&T common, and few farms are with- , /; out. the motor-shed and motor. J- ‘ ’/The style of implements used has ' also., altered considerably. 1 t-• . Haymaking is parried on with a /' minimum of waste time, and - some of the records put up this season would take some beating, The pig has not been neglected :' and his old time wallowing is a . thing of the past. These useful ? animals.graze in dean paddocks i ■ and -have a oomfortable shelter ■ for rough weather. Life in the country is improving, and where • contentment reigns thereto no desire to speculate.
