He held his pursuers at bay for two hours, till Lacombe's lawyer was summoned to endeavour to persuade him to surrender. When the Fire Brigade arrived with'ladders, Lacombe shook his lawyer's hand, and threw himself headlong to the ground, his skull being smashed. The-tragedy was witnessed by many prisoners from their cell windows. They shouted "Vive Lacombe,"and "Vivel'anarchy' when he jumped to his death.
