LAST SATURDAY was the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting and the large attendance once more testified to the popularity of the "Sport of Kings." The weather was beautifully fine and although there was a nip in the air, which induced the wear of costumes, and even furs, it did not detract from the enjoyment of the keen racing and the picturesque surroundings. The huge beds of pansies and ranunculus being much admired, the lawns, too, as usual were in perfect order. The band music enlivened the proceedings—the selections being bright and up-to-date. The tea rooms were daintily decorated with spring flowers, palms and hanging baskets. ,

Pooley, was married to Mr. Bernard Cleland, of Kaponga, Taranaki. The Rev. Je.cks was the officiating clergyman. The church was profusely decorated for the occasion by young lady friends of the family. The bride, on the arm of her father, entered the church, and walked up the aisle to the strains of the Wedding March, played on the organ by Miss Gray. The church was crowded. • • • The bride was attired in a gown of white charmeuse and georgette, trimmed very effectively with rich lace. The court train fell in graceful folds, and was finished with silk fringe and three sprays of orange blossom; with this was worn a dainty tulle veil held in pleats at the back of the head by a wreath of orange blossoms, and a sheath of white rosebuds was carried. • a • There were two bridesmaids. Miss Jessie Mclntosh wore a pretty gown of white taffeta and net with a pink crepe de chine hat, and carried a shower bouquet of pink rosebuds and maiden-hair fern. Miss Ethel Hooton wore a beautiful frock of white georgette and crepe de chine, mauve hat, and carried a shower bouquet of mauve lilac and sweet pea. Both the bridesmaids carried silver chain purses, the gifts of the bridegroom. * • • Mr. Arthur Cleland acted as best man, and Mr. Bridson as groomsman. * • • After the ceremony about 150 guests were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Pooley in the Masonic Hall, Avondale, where a sumptuous wedding breakfast was partaken of. A very successful plain and fancy dress ball was held en Saturday night at the residence of Mrs. Butcher, Station Terrace, Remuera. Mrs Butcher received her guests in a handsome grey crepe de chine frock. Prizes were presented for the two most original fancy costumes, the first prize going to Miss Inez Garry, Stars and Stripes, and the second prize to Miss 0. The rendering of both were much appreciated, and frequent demands*for repetition were made. • * * The solists were Miss Cora Melvin, Miss Ivy Woods, Mr. H. E. Carter, and Mr. F. Monks, Parnell, to Mr. Percy McMahon, M.M., youngest son of Mrs. McMahon, of Mt. Eden, the Rev. Murray officiating. • * * Mr. Monks gave his. daughter away, and she looked very charming in a white crepe de chine, hand embroidered with pearls. The orthodox blossoms and veil were worn and a white shower bouquet carried. • • • Miss Doris Monks was the bridesmaid, and was attired in cream net over taffeta, and black picture hat. Mr. Walter McMahon attended in the capacity of best man. The guests were afterwards entertained at the Kiosk, Parnell Park, by Mr. and Mrs. Monks. # ® ® Miss Evelyn Porter, youngest daughter of Mrs. Porter, of Palmerston, and the late Dr. Porter, was married in England last month to Lieutenant Howard Rijshworth, M.C., youngest son of Mrs. Rishworth, of Devonport, and the late Rev. J. S. Rishworth. Lieutenant Rishworth left New Zealand with the Main Body, and has been with the Royal Engineers in occupation in Germany.

A pretty' wedding took place at the Trinity Methodist Church, Kingsland, on Wedsesday, the 29th inst, when Miss Mamie Browne, eldest daughter of Mrs. W. Browne, New Bond Street, Morningside, was married to Mr. J. H. Muldoon, eldest s«'i of slr. J. H. Muldoon, Miltoa Road, Mt. Eden. The rei,«uionj was performed by .the Rev, Ranston, M.A. * * * The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. W. Browne, was charmingly attired in a cream garbadine costume and pink georgette hat, and carried a beautiful bouquet of pink roses and maidenhair fern. She was attended by Miss Milly Muldoon, sister of the bridegroom, who wore a dainty pink fugi costume, and black hat with touches of pink, and carried a mauve bouquet. Mr. H. V. Hemus acted as best man. Quite uncommon and pretty was the wedding 'at' St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, on Wednesday, the sth November, of Miss Una M. Holmes, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Holmes, "Rosebank," St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell, to Mr. Leslie H. Pettit, youngest son of Mrs. Pettit and the late Mr. W. Pettit, Hawke's Bay. The ceremony was performed by the Yen. Archdeacon Mac Murray. The church had been decorated with beautiful white and the palest pink blossoms, and over the step was an artistic arch, from, which hung a white wedding bell, the decorations being the work of the young girl friends of the bride. « • • • The bride, who was given away by her father, looked most charming in the palest pink charmeuse with a square train, lined with georgette, and embossed with true lovers' knots and silver tissue; on the shoulders a bunch of ninon roses and ostrich feathers, and the whole edge of the train was finished with ostrich mounts. The skirt was a panelled one with a pegged hem. The bodice was cut low and embroidered, with pearls in true lovers' knots, and adorned with silver tassels ; a wide silver tissue belt completed the toilette. A plain silver band and real orange blossoms confined the veil, which was short in front and long at the back. The bouquet was of palest pink and white blossoms, and had pink streamers. * * "* Three bridesmaids were in attendance, Miss Kathleen Holmes (sister of the bride), Miss Ailsa Brown, and Miss Mamie Buckleton. They were frocked alike in turquoise blue charmeuse made with skirts in panier effect, and flat bows across the front of the corsage. The necks were cut low and finished with frills of ivory silk lace, which also finished the short sleeves, blue stockings to match, and gold shoes were worn. The leghorn fiats were lined with blue, and had corded crowns of the same, the trimming being French poppies in shades of mauve blue and pink; Flat posies of cream roses, edged with blue delphinium and maidenhair fern, veiled with tulle, and tied with cream streamers, were carried. Mr. Neil Mackay acted as best man, Mr. Frank Jenkins and Mr. Nelson Holmes being the groomsmen. * * * After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Holmes entertained the guests at "Rosebank," the breakfast being served in a large marquee erected on the lawn. The tables were most tastefully decorated with a colour scheme of pink, roses and sweet pea being much used. The drawingroom was also decorated with pink, and the dining room with pale mauve.

Mrs. Holmes wore an elegant gown of navy blue charmeuse with biscuit lace panels and lace sleeves, navy blue fringe em the charmeuse panels, and a large nigger brown, hat with gold embroidered crown and fawn tip. Mrs. Pettit, mother of the bridegroom, wore a black charmeuse gown and lace jacket, black hat, and carried a heliotrope bouquet. • . • • The bride's travelling dress was of black and white check, small black hat, with gold crown and email flowers. The "Handkerchief Tea" given hy Miss Phyllis MacFarlane at "Boslyn," GUlies Avenue, in honour of Miss Eileen Buckleton was quite a change from the indoor entertainments that have heen given of late, the guests spending most of the afternoon playing tennis and chatting under the shade of the trees. The day was an ideal one for tennis, and a very jolly time was spent. The tea wap served in the dining-room, which was prettily decorated with pink roses. * * * The bride-to-be was the' recipient of quite a number of dainty handkerchiefs. Miss MacFarlane received the guests in a dainty white tennis frock. Miss M. MacFarlane wore blue georgette.
