I consider that a critical time has now arisen, and that some new members are required to exercise caution, with prudence, in the management of the affairs of this port. Already numerous shipowners are transferring the port of registry from Auckland to Sydney, through the better facilities and less restrictions than are being imposed on New Zealand shipowners. If the affairs of the shipping are no t dealt with in a businesslike way, it is only a matter of a little time when there will be no ships registered in New Zealand, and no doubt a heavy increase in wharfage dues on goods. I shall always endeavour to forward the interests of the port. I am not personally asking for votes— if you think lam worthy of your support, I shall be glad if you will exercise same at the ensuing election. lam an independent candidate, and not connected with any party.
