A rather unique libel aotion was heard tbe other day in Sydney. The action was brought fay a Mrs Burkett, licensee of the Somerset Hotel, Newtown, the defendants being the proprietors of the Sydney Morning herald, and the olaim was for £1000. An advertisement was inserted in the paper in the ' personal ' column, •taking that 'a young widow wished to meet a gentleman with a view to matrimony) address EB, Somerset Hotel) Newtown.' Mrs, Burkett maintained that this made it appear that she was no better than she should be, and that she had suffered much discomfort and inoonvenienee. The jury, however, failed to sympathise, and returned a verdict for defendants.
