' Observer ' Defence Fund.
In compliance with the suggestion of those who think the community as a whole should share in the cost of ridding the place of a social nuisance, we have invited subscriptions towards augmenting our defence fund, so as to cover the legal expenses incurred in the prosecution of Hugh Shortland. The following letter and list fully explain themselves and show that the enlightened and public spirited people of Auckland are alive to their duty in the matter : — THE PROSECUTION OP HUGH SHORTLAND. To Messrs Kelly and Batjlf •. Dear Sirs, — The interest which has been awakened in the public mind in relation to the above ca*e is almost without a parallel, and one solid prnof of its intensity and depth isfoundin the eagerness with which numbers of gentlemen have gladly au scribed towards paying the law costs which have been incurred in order to bring the case to a satisfactory conclusion. I may tell you that the general opinion of those who are ab.e to judge of this case is, that there is no other power existing in this colony which could or would have tackled the job but yeurselves. I have great pleasure in asking you to publish the following subscriptions, and it will be seen that the names of some of our most honoured citizens are in this, my first list. In the performance of this pleasing duty I have been greatly assisted by Mr R. ,T. Duncan. — I am, etc.,
