THE COUNTRY
MojN t GONI7I. Just fancy P. saying Gr. is tlic only gentleman in Mongonui ! "Wliat constitutes a gentleman after tliat ? The elite portion of our city is determined upon keeping tip appearances. We Lear of quarrels and counter-quarrels nearly every week. Our worthy " gentleman of the Avhite choicer " sang small the other day while making that apology. That comes of believing all the gossip , you hear in this sociable (!) city. I heard a friend remark the other day, " It's wonderful what a 'tenner 'will do." Could he have been referring to Gr. having to ask his friend W. whether he should visit a dying man or not ? The Jsorihern Lmninarij 1 s local correspondent, in noticing a recent departure from among us, forgot to mention that, there was a general clearing out of old iron and other rubbish on the occasion. I much regret having to record the death of Mr Herbert Matthews (caused by cancer in the tongue through smoking a dirty clay pipe) . Mr Matthews was respected by everyone in the district, and many will be sorry to hear of their old friend's death. What was the confab about between P. and little V. on the wharf the other day ? You are wrong again, P., if you imagine Jack made those " gassy " observations anent the mill. Mr Editor coidd a tale unfold, if you only had the Influence you boast so much of.
