When Britons first, at Greed's command, Came cruising to the Southern main, They raised, upon New Zealand's strand, Their conquering- llajr, and sang- this strain— .Rule, Britannia ! Britannia rules the waves. Inferior races must be slaves. The Maoris, not so strong as ihee, Must in their turn before ihee fall ; Their lands must, confiscated be, Eor thou canst "gobble up " Ihem all. Rale, Britannia, &c. Still more aggressive shalt thou rise, And crow o'er each successful " stroke,' While natives gaze, in blank surprise, On men who every promise broke ! Rule, Britannia, &<\ Xo empty prophecies shall tame Thy thirst for limcl, or keep thee down ; To Whiti's fall shall be thy shame, And gain him martyrdom's renown ! Rule, Britannia, &c. Xow thine shall be Waimate Plain, Through deeds that do not brightly shine ; E'en Kawau's isle and subject, main Shall own Britannia's " right Divine " ! Rule, Britannia, &c. And Yorkshircmen, wlio've halters found, Shall to New Zealand's shore repair ; Blest isle ! where fertile lands abound, And laws that let you " grab " them fair ! Rule, Britannia, &c.
