TAURANGA.

What about tho bag of sovereigns ? I have much pleasure in informing their sorroAving relatives that the two young gentlemen avlio leaped from the Avhavf with the intention of swimming the harbour on the ball night are none the Avorse for their exposure, thanks to the gallant conduct of Mr G. Wrigley, avlio boldly plunged to the rescue Mr MattheAvs requests mc to state that he was only tAventy-soven hours on the road to Ohinemutu, and not three days, as rumoured. , ....... It AA'as great fun to see the staid aud solemu disciple of Esculapius trying his apron on the blushing Miss L. Luckily his spouse had already departed Poor Fred S.! That "tcachor" made a bad pupil of more than you -at the ball. Two of our friends found themselves on the wrong side of the " Jordon "('"s) cattle yards about noon the next day. Oh, dear ! I feel so sick Mrs A's ansAver to Montie when he asked her -to dance was worth hearing. "No, Montie, not at a ball of this kind." Then aside, "I am not going to dance with boys at a large ball like this." Mrs Gr., Miss F., and Mr Pie-eater

looked very nice through the framoAvork of flags ; so did the larrikins on the other side. But joking apart, Avhen people think a ball too awfully mixed for them they should stay away altogether, and not peep. What is more, they ought to have known better than to take a gentleman Avhere there Avas little enough room for the ladies to pass into their dressing-room Mr 11.L.F. has entered upon a new role, viz., that of amateur athlete. As I Avas passing a certain paddock the other evening I observed Mr F. taking a half -mile spin Avith a young bank official, Avhom he beat easily in the first lap. If all our citizens took the same interest in sport as this gentleman does, the entries for tho athletic sports Avould not have been so meagre. It is a singular fact that in a large community like this athletics should bo so neglected. We have cricket, football, athletic, and now a hiAvn tennis club ; but although these, exist, they are supported (except by a few really energetic members) in a half-hearted manner. We have a splendid harbour here, and yet no roAving club. Although this club once existed, it came to a sad and untimely end through the death of its most ardent supporter The Masonic _ ball was Avithout doubt tho grandest affair of the kind yet given in Tauranga. No end of kudos is due to the gentlemen avlio so tastefully designed the decorations. To give even the most striking of the various costumes Avould take up too much space, so I shall put down only a few Avhich came particularly under my notice. Mrs S — y in Avhite cashmere elaborately trimmed Avith real lace, and cut square, crimson' flowers and shaded crimson trimmings, looked very nice ; Mrs G. and Miss F. avoi-c striking costumes, but the flags obscured tho view ; Mrs M — s, drab silk and pink trimmings ; Miss L— eh, pink 'silk and Avhitc lace, Irish diamonds and ten-button gloves ; Miss P — s, blue cashmere trimmed Avith lace, long blue mittens and silver ornaments ; Miss Fr — c, Avhite and pink tarlatano skirt, pink silk body, altogether charming. But the very pink of perfection Avas Miss Cl— n. She Avore nearly all pink — pink tarlatane over pink sateen, pink boAvs on dress and shoes, pink stockings*, pink — but

I'll not write any more, and can only hope I may have another equally pleasant reunion to chronicle before long.
