CAP AND JACKET

SPORTING- TELEGRAMS

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Christchtjrcu, Thursday,

GERALDINE MEETING.

— The racing season commenced at Geraldine last Thursday and Friday under most promising circumstances. The weather was beautiful, and the racing really good with the exception of the Hurdle Race, which was " dry hash," Clarence being kept up to the last and then scratched, leaving it a moral for The Agent. The owners liad their money on, and he started at odds of 5 to 1 on him, and Avon easily. The other three that started were very inferior. Huntington was the only one that had a show, and he ran round the third hurdle when leading a long way. Being a local horse, this mishap gave the local people an idea Huntingdon could wi», and they matched liim to run The Agent next day for £100 a-side, same course and distance. They both went straight, and Agent Avon in a Avalk, and the Geraldineites Avere satisfied. Luna won the Publicans' easily, but in sloav time ; Coldstrcam, second ; On i)it (the favourite), third. Six started. Coldstream won the Cup by a head from Hilda ; Don Juan, third ; On Dit, last from start to finish. Four started. It Avas a grand xace, run in fast time — tAvo miles and a quarter in 4min. llsec. On Dit disappointed her OAvners Tery much. She • was thought a moral for the double, and backed at eA'en money for each event. The filly was, however, never once dangerous. A three-year-old (a Aery fine colt bred in Tasmania, named Tasman) Avon the Maiden Plate and "Welter Race easily. Luna won the Flying Handicap by half a head from Hilda, and Joker Avon the Consolation. Other races Avere local, and of no interest. THE AMULET COMMISSION". — On Saturday night a commission Avas executed for R. Yallance, he taking all the money at 100 to 15 Amulet for the Derby and 100 to 12 for the Cup, and 100 to 6 same horse for the double, Derby and Cup. He Avas afterwards backed at 100 to 30 for Derby, Avhich is uoav his price, and 4to 1 Cup. Dauphin and Amulet are first favourites for Derby. The Peeress colt being in the same stable as Amulet, is uoav knocked out, 100 to 15 being his quotation, with no takers. He is supposed to have fever in his feet, as ho always goes lame Avhen worked. Our Derby horses at present appear a poor lot. Ido not think we shall have more than five starters. Since On Dit's wretched performance at Geraldine, Grip has gone back in the betting for the C.J.C. and Cup, as On Dit and Grip are in the same stable and do their work together. Lady Emma and Grip are equal favourites at 100 to IS ; Libeller, 100 to 15. DUNEDIN ENTRIES. — Nominations closed on Saturday night for the Dunedin Autumn Meeting, but were not satisfactory. Great surprise is expressed at Robinson, Lance and Stead not nominating anything. The first-named has acted thus on accotmt of the fuss made about the !Natator case last year, and the other on account of the incivility of the Dunedin Club to him. There are others Avho Avould not liaA'e entered, only they cannot afford to stand out. In the Cup there are thirty-eight entries, and some more are expected from Melbourne, amongst others Sir Modred and Somnus. For the Hurdles there are fifteen ; Publicans, twentyseven ; Tallyho, fifteen ; City Stakes, twentyone ; NoA'el Race, seven ; Jockey Club Handicap, thirty-six; Steeplechase, tAvclve ; Forbury Handicap, thirty -five ; Flying Handicap, twenty-two. — Napier Meeting takes place next Tuesday and Wednesday. I leave for there to-day. Mischief is a big favourite for the Handicap. Napier, Thursday. XAPIEK MEETING. — There are about a dozen amateur bookmakers Tiere, "with books varying in value from five j shillings up to a pound, btit no betting worth mentioning. I "Walters' team. — Walters' horses arrived on Tuesday after a very tad passage. The Slander filly Avas throAvn doAvn during a gale on Monday night, but does not seem niuch hurt. I fancy the Slander filly or Squire for the Guineas, Duchess or BadsAvorth for the Spring Handicap, and Loch Lomond for the Hurdles. Foul Play is very big, and I do not like his appearance.
