MELBOURNE CUT. — I hear the New Zealand liorses are doing "nell in Melbourne, and are much fancied.
GERALDINE MEETING
— I leave for the G-eraldine meeting this morning. There is plenty of speculation, and the racing will be good — in fact, no "dry hash." JFancy four different owners backing their own liorses for the Publicans' Handicap, distance a mile and a quarter. One takes 60 to 40 Luna, another GO to 40 Coldstream, a third 100 to 50 On Dit, and a fourth 100 to 30 Hilda. The others — Don Juan, Joker, and Jangler — are not tacked. In the Hurdles The Agent is the only liorse backed, the jn-iee being even money. For the G-eraldine Cup On Dit is an even money chance, and Coldstream stands at sto 2. The races take place to-morrow and Friday.
COMMISSIONS FOR THE C.J.C.
— SjDecvilation is brisk on the Christchurch meeting. Bendy Money Eobinson sent his commissioner into Tnttersali's room on Friday night, and lie backed Grip for the C.J.C. Handicap for £1700 to £255, and also for the Cup at £1500 to £225. Grip is now at 100 to 25 for each event. Mata has been backed for the Cup at 100 to 30 by the Dunedin people, who have put down about £2000. The Peeress colt and Dauphin continue the best favourites for the Derby, their price being 3to 1. Mata arrived here on Saturday, and is staying at Sam Powell's. The horse looks \cry light and haggard ; he has been suffering from a cold, but is now all right. Stewart will train Mm. Waddell has brought Tubal Cain, a colt two years old, and Chancellor is here in Ted Cutts' stable, looking well. Le Loup is expected up this week ; he lias been backed for a lot of money. Double event speculation is brisker now on forthcoming events than it lias been for years.
EXTRAORDINARY BOAT-RACE
— The " Pirates of Penzance " Company have done abig business at the theatre here. ' They will visit Auckland at Christmas. The Pomeroy Company open to-night, and expect good business. The boat-race last Saturday between the Pirate King (Carey) and Mr Belcher (a member of the ring), resulted in a victory for Carey, much to Belcher's surprise.
