— The sculling match between White and Hearn takes place to-morrow (Saturday,), at Wellington. — The Ponsonbyites go over to the North Shore, on Saturday, to play the "Red and White." — Rush has sent for Dunlop, of Newcastle, to prepare him for his match with Laycock. — Grafton plays against Auckland, next Saturday, on the Metropolitan Ground. A good game is expected
. — Victoria defeated New South Wales in the intercolonial football match.
— In a recent football match between Victorian and Adelaide teams, the former, which won, scored no less than 13 goals and 17 tries. — It is rumoured in aquatic circles that a big Hop Bitters prize is to be given shortly, for a rowing contest on Australian waters.
— The ground was very heavy last Saturday, and the quantity of mud that some of the players took home with them, was astonishing.
— Boyd's sculling races with Elliott and Ross take place next Monday, and that with Trickett, in September. — Hanlan is reported as having said that he would give either Courtnay or Trickett fifteen seconds, or Wallace Ross ten seconds start in five miles. — The English cricketing world has received a terrible shock. Lord Harris announces his intention to retire from public cricket ! Query— Will the knights of the bat and ball ever survive it ? — Charley White obtained the only try scored in the football match on the Metropolitan Groiind, last Saturday. Whiteside, however, failed to kick a goal. — So feAV members rolled up on Saturday last, that a scratch team, chosen by Mackay, played one chosen by Aenderson ; and it resulted in a very good game. — A scratch football match between teams selected by Messrs T. Henderson andT. Mackay, was played on the Metropolitan ground last Saturday. The team of the former was victorious. — Rush has offered to back the brothers McDonald to row E. Laycock and Messenger, or Laycock and any other man, a double scull race in light skiffs, far £100 a side. — The three-ton yacht Sybil is to be raffled shortly. She is a smart little craft, was built less than a year ago, and won the first prize, in the small yacht race, at the Ponsonby Eegatta. It will also be remembered that she defeated the Hattie May in a race, about two months ago. — The football match, New Zealand v. the World, which was to have been played last Saturday, had to be postponed, as only a portion of the selected teams were on the ground. This was the result of the bad weather during the early part of June. — The wet weather during the earlier part of last Saturday afternoon caused the match between the second fifteen of the Ponsonby Football Club and the West End Club to fall through. Only one Ponsonbyite was on the ground, while the opposing team mustered in force. — Advices from Wellington on Tuesday stated that Hearn was the favourite for the sculling match at sto 4. White was the favourite in Auckland last week, but confidence in him appeared to have decreased considerably on Monday, when odds were given on Hearn. This change was the result of the opinion that White had trained too fine. Betting was slightly in favor of Hearn, but in one instance his backer possessed sufficient confidence to give £16 to tilO on his chances. _^^___^^^________ ACT2EON.
