The scene in the City Council
offices on Monday morning beggars description 1 Tke employees, from the Town. Clerk downwards, gazed on each other with marked suspicion and distrust. No one felt sure the missing £7 hadn't been "burgled" by the other, and if anyone had casxially produced three or four one pound notes he would have been arrested on the spot. When the lost en« velope was found in — place of places — the waste paper basket, a delirium of joy and gladness set in. The Town Clerk and Mr. Brodie danced a private can-can in the Mayor's room, his worship providing the music with a penny whistle. Mr. Woolfield threw his left leg gamely over Detective Jeffrey's head and Mr. Eller, procuring a pair of scissors, commenced in a frenzy of delight to cut a foot or so off the ends of his trousers.
