There was a truly Christian-like candour and a commendable alacrity displayed in the Herald's apology to Mr. Crowther anent the "Engaged Card" business. The first trait would of course be the outcome of a nature fermented and suffused, as it were, with a burning sense of justice and fair-play to all the human race. The alacrity was also to be admired, although the motive which prompted it might possibly have been a desire to escape from an action for libel. , Be that as it may, the mind of the writer -of the apology par. was either from . perturbation or some other cause in a state of lamentable confusion. Listen, if you please, to this : — " The information on which the comments were based was erroneous, and it is but fair to Mr. Crowther, ivho rents them, that we should put him straight with our readers." The italics are introduced in order to give emphasis to the inquiry, "Why does Mr. Crowther rent the Herald's ' comments.' " It would also be interesting to know what lie pays for them, and why lie pays at all, when he can get any amount — offensive or apologetic — for nothing ?
