But in order that they may prevail Liberals must beAvare lioav they admit into their ranks men sailing under false colours. There are Liberals of yesterday, Liberals of to-day, and Liberals of the morroAV. The Liberals of yesterday are Avell knoAvn. They have ahvays heen distinguished as upholding popular rights and popular progress in opposition to those Avhose sole care Avas for Avhat they called the " great interests " of the Colony. They have fought for men and their rights as men. They have fought for interests only Avhere they have not been merely the selfish interests of selfish men caring little, so long as they prospered, what became of the rest of the Colony. They have never forgotten that it is the distribution of Avealth, far more than its creation, upon Avhich the happiness and real progress of a people depend. And they have never ceased to remind the people that this great end can only be permanently secured by the Government being kept under the direct control of the people — becoming their servant instead of their ruler and lord.
