The second Earl of Manchester Avas the one Avho for a time commanded the Parliamentary Army in the Civil War. He seems to have been a Avell-meaning man, possessed of no great abilities, Avho had to be removed from his command in order to make Avay for Fairfax and Cronrwell, Avhen it Avas found that he Avas incapable of pushing any advantage that had been gained by tlie A r alour of the Puritan soldiers. He occasionally took part in puhlic affairs after this, though lie had no hand in the trial and execution of King Charles. He took ashare in effecting the Restoration, and to his discredit be it recorded that he also acted as one of the judges Avho tried the Regicides, several of Avhom had fought under him in days gone by.
