OUT DOOR SPORTS

— None of the Sydney yachts competed at the Melbourne Regatta. — The United Cricket Club won their second match against Parnell lasj Saturday very easily. — A race Avill probably be placed on the programme of the next Ponsonby Kegatta, for sailing boats under thirteen or fourteen feet. — Isaac made a good score of 38 runs in the match between the West End and Otahuhu Cricket Clubs last Saturday. — The Onehunga Cricket Club first and second elevens defeated the Carlton and Civil Service Clubs respectively last Saturday. — The Rugby Union wrote to the Australian footballers advising them agsinst sending a team to England next season. — Hanlan Avas desirous that the race with Laycock for the championship of th 6 world ■should take place at Toronto Bay, Canada. — The Invercargill twenty-two were easily Tjeaten by the Australian eleven, who had one "innings and nearly one hundred runs to spare. — The Australian cricketers, who arrived at the Bluff on Monday last, lost no time in commencing operations. Their match at Invercargill began on the same afternoon. — The cutter yacht "Dove," 24 tons, is • advertised for sale in the Christchurch ])apers. She is represented as being one of the fastest yachts in New Zealand. — William Gale, on November 20th, coinmencen the task of walking 2,500 miles in 1000 hours, walking a mile and a quarter ever half hour, in London, England. — Arrangements are being made for the third meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association which takes place at Nelson on March Ist. and following days. — The " Taniwha" and "Secret, "which were second and third in the challenge yacht race at the Melbourne Regatta, were both built i$ Auckland. — The yacht "Jessie Logan" is having anew outfit of canvas made at considerable expense. •She will compete in the second-class yacht race at the approaching regatta. —I hope the members of the West End Cricket Club feel proud of their three victories on Saturday last. It is a coincidence which •does not often happen in the cricket field. — The yachts "Lala," "Jessie Logan," "Toy," and "Volatile" are all expected to •enter for the race under six tons at the approaching regatta. — J. Waymouth, who has recently'recommenced business in Auckland as a boatbuilder, is at present engaged in the construction of an open-sailing boat to compete in the second-class yacht race at the approaching regatta. — In the course of the match West End v. Otahuhu, played on the latter's ground last Saturday, Andrew Hanna took three wickets in •three consecutive balls, and in the same match •Charley Butler made a clean hit for 6 runs. — The open-sailing boat built by Mr. Logan, ;and which is expected to compete in the firstclass race at the approaching regatta, is now being fitted out readj^ for the contest. She will •carry an exceedingly large spread of canvas. — The outrigger ordered from Swaddle and Winship of Newcastle, on Tyne, for the use of "the Auckland crew at the approaching regatta, as on board the barque A. C. Trietas, now about '90 days out from London. It is very improbable that it will arrive in time for the regatta. — It was decided not to send the sailing boat •" Imp" to Wellington to compete in the regatta there, as she would not be able to get back to Auckland in time to race here. The regatta takes place to-morrow (Saturday) and up till last week, £150 had been subscribed toward the •expenditure. — A wager boat, built of cedar, and measuring jS2 feet in length; twelve inches beam, and twelve fnehes slide, was on view during the week at •Captain H. F. Anderson's store. It was built by Mr. H. T. Green, of Dunedin, for the Melbourne Exhibition, but not being completed in time, it was sent up to Auckland for sale. . —A cablegram, dated December 6, and published in an American paper, says : — "Wallace Ross challenges Laycock to row a race over the Thames championship course for $100 a side, two months from time of signing the articles of agreement, on the condition that if Laycock beats Hanlan in the match which will take place on January 17, the race shall also be for The Sportsman Challenge Cup. — The Regatta Club lias extended the time for receiving entries for the champion outrigger race until the 27th inst., general entry day. This has been rendered necessary by the nonarrival of several entries which were expected by the committee-. As the course adopted •should have the effect of increasing the number of competing boats, it should be generally approved of. —A correspondent writes :— What has become of the Ponsonby Rowing Club ? W-e neither see nor hear anything of it. Surely with the amount of energy we expect to see amongst the young men of that energetic and enterprising suburb there can be no truth in the rumour of a probable wind up of the club. A little more active interest on the part of the members of the Committee, • the Captain and Secretary would doubtless have a desirable effect in stimulating members to more regular practice. A series oi matches which could easily be arranged, would "be a great inducement to this desirable end. So little too has been done up to the present time that we fear the Ponsonby Rowing Club cannot now be expected to be represented at the forthcoming regatta. We cannot believe the members will allow the Club to fall back into a third-rate position.
