Professor Swallow's Concert
ON Friday evening last the Auckland people showed their appreciation of Mr. Swallow's high reputation as an eminent "maestro" of the piano-forte, both as a teacher and public performer, by mustering in great numbers to hear the Concert given by that gentleman, at the Theatre Royal. There was a splendid dress circle attendance, and the stalls too were well
clarinet solo (Air, with variations— Mohr) wa* excellently well-played, and artistically second to nothing in the whole programme. The rapid passages were remarkably clearly done ; and the slow movement tended, in its simple and " grazioso " beauty, to show up the bright finish Mr. Swallow played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata " in grand style, more particularly the earlier slow movements. The " allegro vivace," when last I heard Charles Halle play this piece, was taken, if we recollect rightly, a trifle (quicker than the pace our local professor exhibited. By saying this, no fault is found, on the contrary, — for the greatest piano-forte players of the day (Rubenstein, Von Bulow, Charles Halle, Madame Schumann, Marie Krebbs, and Arabella Goddard) render the works of the great masters according to their own individual interpretation's, and the " school " they have been studying in.
